Hiking - Walking: Cascades de Nyon & Thonon-Les-Bains Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: rain the snow + gale force winds :( Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Woke to awful day at Morillon, low cloud and rain but top night in van –
toasty as mild outside. After breakfast we packed van without going
outside, moved a bit closer to lift to fill up our water container from
trough before heading off in the direction of Cluse. It seemed to brighten
up so thought we would walk at the Cirque at Sixt, so headed to the
supermarket on the way to Samoens for provisions but when we came out the
weather had turned again so drove to Taninges. We decided to go to Morzine
and see if we could find the hotel we stayed in with our boys for a
paragliding holiday in the summer fifteen years ago. So took the very
beautiful road up to Les Gets passing a great mountain stream in full
flow:) We passed through Les Gets, didn’t look that great a ski resort
but at least no high rise!!! Then on to Morzine, we spent awhile looking
for the hotel with no success (but we think we tracked it down on the piste
map). Seeing a sign for a cascade at Nyon we headed there and parked by
the river for cuppa soup:) With the snow falling nicely now we walked the
slippery path to the cascade which was lovely but not good weather for
taking pics:( Set off again driving down the gorge to Lac Lemon past where
Rob and I had a great white-water raft in 1998 (Dan was just too young :( )
We parked on the nice lac side prom at Thonon-Les-Bains and walked to the
port/marina as the wind increased!!! We saw loads of Goosanders, tufted
ducks and grebes in the rough lac, the square by the marina was lovely with
lots of pollarded trees. Back to the van for coffee and cake then looked
for somewhere to park for the night out of the wind just up the lac at
Vongy but after driving through a huge industrial estate couldn’t find it
so decided to head for Lac de Nantua . It took us a long time to reach the
motorway at the other side of Geneva and when we did the conditions were
horrendous!!!! :( heavy snow and strong winds had reduced the road to
single carriage way. We decided it was not worth the risk driving off the
motorway to the Lac and would stop over night at the next services which is
when the road came to a grinding holt as they closed the carriageway
completely just by the Nantua exit!!! We were lucky enough to get to the
slip road for the Nantua aire and managed to drive past the full lorry park
to the car section in deep snow and park up - we were all but stuck in the
snow but thought we have our snow chains and hopefully the road will be
cleared in the morning??? We hadn’t been here long when loads of
ploughs/gritters cleared the car park – I think this is a turning point
for the ploughs, so fingers crossed we will be alright in the morning???
